Album Review: The Texas Gentlemen Are The “TX Jelly” To Your Soul’s Peanut Butter
YAAASSSS!!!!!!!!!!! YAAAAASSSSS!! YAAAAASSSS! This is what i said when I heard The Texas Gentlemen’s TX Jelly. Ugh, just call my ears peanut butter with how well this “TX Jelly” spread, smoothed, and tasted upon my listening buds. There are times when something is so good you resort to grunts and basic human noises like, “YAS!,” to utter what we happily feel but fail to so vastly convey: pleasure.
The Lone Star-bred collective is an ever-evolving cast of characters based around the core sextet of Beau Bedford, Nik Lee, Daniel Creamer, Matt McDonald, Ryan Ake, and Scott Lee. In some ways, their union is like a summer camp of sound and bliss that is hard to define but easy to experience. Each member brings in an energy of restless cowboys and cowgirls swinging chords as if they were about to catch the cattle/ crowd. Yes, I am calling you, the listener, cattle, but you want to be led by their classic fusions of blues, soul, folk, country, rock and gospel. I wanted to start a sermon after listening to “Habbie Doobie”, I booked a flight to Hawaii after hearing “My Way”, started a Tinder account after hearing “Pretty Flowers”, and took a nap after listening to “Dream Along” because when Texas Gentlemen tell you to do something, you do it! Alright, they did not push me to join Tinder, but when you hear “Shakin All Over” you feel like you NEED to start dating again. The way they gut-bust drums and flare guitars until they make you weep or leap explains why this band has backed the likes of stars such as Kris Kristofferson and Leon Bridges. This band understands that music is more than just an “act” it is an action.
To hear music is to “start” something! How many times of your life can you associate to a song? Music is the soundtrack of our daily living, which is why TX Jelly turns your day into a film. From “Pain” to “Gone” or “Superstition”, Texas Gentlemen have arranged their album to play every emotion for its height. Even delicate, quiet tracks such as, “Trading Paint”, amplify sentiment. Texas Gentleman are completely aware that simple or complex, a chord is the cause to your effect, and they want you to be effected.
