Album Review: Tkay Maidza Observes Last Year Was Weird Vol 1
TKay Maidza is unapologetically herself. She is confident, athletic, and creates tracks that push people to feel comfortable in themselves: even when they are weird and carefree. It is strange how we all cut ourselves from confidence because it feels too good, and her new EP, Last Year Was Weird (LYWW) Vol 1, Tkay is not doing that anymore.
The Aussie rapper has been building an international following for her songs that make you feel like life is a winnable, tennis match, of which she was, literally, a champion player. Yet, LYWW her her singing even more; turning the dials between rapping and crooning. The result is a record that is surprisingly more soul-searching and spiritual for the “Flexin” singer. While she still promotes her listeners to strut their stuff, she also asks them to analyze what they have.
Tkay Maidza – Flexin’ (Official Video) ft. Duckwrth
“Big Things,” “Growing Up,” “White Rose,” and “Back In” asks listeners to see what they give and what they receive. With verses that are succinct, like a series of quotes, Tkay has an “adaged” quality to the way she sings and spits rhymes like, every verse is the beginning of an affirmation or, at least, the search for one. Yet, again, Tkay Maidza is a confident, young woman; she only needs to affirm herself. Thus, her luxuriant vocals feel voluminous; like she is adding shine and height to your mind through adding it to her own. Similar to many songstresses coming up, like Ella Mai and H.E.R., Tkay’s voice is like sugar coating to a rhythmic cake; destined to top-off the sweet layers of sound.
