Album Review: Torres’ Shows You The “Three Futures” of Life According To Joy

To Indulge or Deny? That is the desirous question? Torres’ new album, Three Futures, seems like a woman deciding to give in to the things that make her happy rather than the other options: fakery or numbness. In essence, they are interchangeable. When you deny yourself joy, you either become a ghost or an enemy of it, but never the worthiest actualization of it. Yes, I am getting deep. but Torres appreciates depth. This electro-pop songstress is ALL about that MOOD Life.

From Jhene Aiko’s Trip to the newest record by Florist, this week feels dominated by songstresses that want to delve beyond the wonders of love to the wonders of living, Yet, I am not talking about the typical, “Oh where am I going with my life?!”. Although I love those themes, Torres is talking about freeing yourself from restraint, and giving in to what makes you happy beyond social bounds and glares. Tracks like “Skim”, “Helen In The Woods”, and “Concrete Ganesha” stand out for their usage of gothic textures and grimed tapestries to symbolize all the soot you have to overcome to finally reach your fire. With instrumentals and synths that seemed made and marked by a church organ, there is something dark, but holy about Torres’ Three Futures. From “Tongue Slap Your Brains Out” to “To Be Given A Body”, Torres uses her voice like a peeler of layers. Think of her voice like a kitchen scalpel cutting through fruits and starches to leave them bare only with their value; like an orange that has been peeled so that you may solely bite into its juice. For Torres, it is not range that sparks presentation as much as theatricality. She vocally waltzes through songs like a Victoria queen with NO NEED for any “king” to tell her that her body is beautiful, her mind is strong, and her kingdom is hers.

The irony of Torres is that she uses a darker sound to bring an enlightened message: give in to joy. Do not hook your happiness upon barriers or destinations, but allow yourself to live according to the ecstasies and edges you wish to cross as in “Righteous Woman” and “Bad Baby Pie”. Thus, Torres Three Futures is a record for those mature enough to realize it is not naught to love your body and its pleasure; it is necessary.
