Album Review: Wizkid Is Readying To Be A Global Phenomena With Sounds From The Other Side
What more can be said about Wizkid beyond you are about to hear HIM A LOT. His debut Sounds From The Other Side is one club banger after the other. The King of Afro- Hop (Afro-Beat and Hip Hop), Wizkid is Fela meets Drake. He draws from African beats that once were the backdrop for social revolutionaries, and converts them into dance mixes that recall and ignite the need to waken your soul/ body. Thus, Sounds From The Other Side, one of the best albums of the year, and, at least, the most danceable one.
WizKid – Daddy Yo
Best is an expansive term because it is deemed according to a person’s perception of quality. For me, Wizkid serves quality beats with a flow that is distinctly his. My readers know that I LOVE when I hear someone, and knowing that I will never hear anyone like them, at least, unless he or she is a copy. Wizkid is a pure original with “Sweet Love”, “Nobody”, and “African Bad Gyal” destined to make nightlife around the world a lot steamier. In many ways, Wizkid is opening the doors for Afro-Hop in the same ways Daddy Yankee did for Reggaeton. Of course, each was not the “first one” to start their genres, but they became the biggest names and global pioneers for musics that rise from the poverty of a nation to show the prosperity of a culture. From Puerto Rico to Nigeria, these nations have suffered torrid, economic histories, and each beat and sexualized lyric is like an escape route to the many parties in both countries where music, at times, was literally all people had. Thus, my giddiness for Wizkid’s debut is that he truly can align himself as a global phenomena for Nigeria and for Afro-Hop.
WizKid – Come Closer (Redux – Official Video) ft. Drake
I’m not diluting things to satisfy an American audience,” he says firmly, “Africa is my heart. I really want my Nigerian fans, my core fans, to get it.” Frankly, it is genius that he does not dilute his originality for himself as a creator and potential, cultural taste-maker. Those that influence a scene are those that refuse to mold or follow it: just lead. With a flow that is casually seductive, as in “All For Love”, “Sexy”, and “Naughty Ride”, Wizkid will prove to America that he is not just the producer of hits for Drake, i.e. One Dance. He can also get fellow singing seducers like, Trey Songz in “Gbese” , to back him as his own rising star.To Buy Wizkid’s Sounds From The Other Side On July 14, Click Here.
