Albums of October: Nao Takes You To Saturn

Saturn, as an ancient symbol, is often associated with time and harvest; the idea that the seeds you sow culminate into what you reap. Nao’s Saturn has a similar meaning, but places it upon relationships. How you cultivate love amongst a field of men determines whether you get fruit or weeds!

First, I have to say that Nao’s Saturn completely avoids the “sophomore slump” that so many artists face, especially after a wonderful debut. For All We Know smacked upon the music industry like a backhand filled with glitter. Yet, Nao’s Saturn does not stray from sound and essence of her debut. Instead, it settles and cleans it with a confidence that allows Nao to carve a corner just for herself in terms of music. While every artist aims to be good, Nao also aims to be distinguishable. Thus, her second album feels like a step forward on a sonic path that no one can or will replicate because it distinctly fuses genres such as, funk, pop, and R&B.

I adore Nao’s sound, and her voice is quintessentially benevolent. Tracks like, “Yellow of The Sun,” “Love Supreme,” and “Drive And Disconnect” may bop like a discotheque in the tropics, but her voice always feel small, kind, and tremendously powerful. If Jesus said, “Blessed are the meek” then Nao tells them, “Go dance and fall in love after your blessing!” From “If You Ever” to “Make It Out Alive,” she approaches love like those of us whom are humble to it, and understand the greatest love stories are the ones that last in embrace. While many may sing to the rise and fall or revolving romances, Nao sings to “the one” that makes you stay through every emotional “Orbit” or revolution life throws at you.
Nao – Another Lifetime (Official Video)

Nao is not only different in style, but she is also a different messenger of love.“Don’t Change,” “Curiosity,” and “Make It Out Alive” have her noble, queenly voice honeying over the ups and downs of staying with one person. The realization that you have found someone who you are not leaving and is not leaving you, BUT still leaves you with the task of figuring how you stay with him/her. Thus, as rhythms move and pose as if they, themselves, are dancing, Nao’s Saturn shows that building a love story is the equivalent to birthing a planet. When you find your “one,”your romance will take you to another world. For More Information On Nao And To Buy Saturn Click Here.
