Artist Close- Up: Shigeto Turns Detroit City Into A Fashion Capital For Music

Combining trap, hip-hop, jazz, Detroit techno & ambient electronics, Shigeto’s The New Monday has turned the sounds of Detroit into the neon city of Tron. Basslines zoom through on futuristic motor-bikes to investigate the lives and wonder you will find one night in Detroit.

.

It is oddly befitting to have such a futuristic, even “arcade sound” pulsing through The New Monday. The minute you meet people and learn about, you feel like a friendly detective; piecing together what has made this person who they are. Shigeto, real name Zach Saginaw, explained The New Monday is “focused on a couple things and they all kind of come together to represent different things. My time back in Detroit, back living in Michigan and spending time with a lot of kind of original people who have always been here, learning from them, hearing stories from them, being influenced by them, and inspired by them.” People can carry a vibrancy that can be heard in songs such as, “There’s A Vibe Tonight (ft. Kaleena Zanders)”, “. Don’t Trip (ft. Silas Green)”, and “Detroit Part II”. As you enter the album, you feel you have entered the sprights and seeds of city nightlife; where you will encounter the ones that want to love and connect and clash with those that want otherwise. It is truly amazing to have a talented producer/ beat-maker like Shigeto create a record where each song feels like a person that has crossed your path. Every machinated rhythm is a symbol of their intentions, of which Shigeto will always give you the lightest “Barry White (ft. ZelooperZ)” and darkest motivations “Wit Da Cup” in style.

The New Monday is a neon-splash of an album, and reminds listeners that creating sound is creating a style. Elements of dance music, jazz, and ambient sounds are woven together like textures to create something new in the same way fabrics are transformed into clothes.
