Concert Review: The Belle Game Serve Synth- Pop Self-Empowerment At Brooklyn Steel

I reviewed The Belle Game’s Fear/Nothing for its usage of synth-pop as a platform for self-empowerment. Lead singer Andrea Lo furthered proved what I already knew, fear is nothing, and if you take it up, you turn your heart into nothing, as well. Hence, I was unsurprised to discover a band that give a performance to pump peace into your blood as much as music into you heart.
Belle Game – Spirit

I am in love Andrea Lo. First, her voice is 10X’s more powerful and playful in a live show. She is so present, and, in a way, sings her songs as if they were an audition to the crowd. As a person who has auditioned, let me explain. When you go into a room to perform for people who either have seen you before or never knew you even existed, you are drawn not only by your natural desire for them to like you, but also your sincere want for them to understand what you have discovered/ transformed about humanity into song. Through tracks “Yuh”, “Spirit” , “Bring Me”, and “Low”, Andrea Lo unpacked every single thing that makes us scared to be us. From self-doubt to spiritual/body insecurity, I thought I was watching a Millennial Oprah (Shoutout to the millions of times I have mentioned Oprah in articles!) Yet, I always admire people who make love, especially self-love, sound good, beautiful, and not gimmicky. How many times do we hear people say, “What are you a hippie?”, when a person says to choose peace over war? How many times do we hear people say, “Well, you should not have been so kind?”, after a person hurt you? We treat the better person as if they were wrong for being so good, and The Belle Game say, “No, actually, you should only get kinder!”. It is a beautiful sentiment that felt like literal magic had transcended into soft-electronica, and been released over Brooklyn Steel.

With how massive Brooklyn Steel, it is always intriguing to see how “quieter” or more soulful musicians, like Jaymes Young, play in such venues. You often think you have to go big or loud to fill the space, but, sometimes, you need to go the opposite like, in an audition; you have to make the same people you came for, actually, come to you. Andrea Lo, YOU DID THAT! For More Information On The Belle Game Click Here.
