Artist Close-Up: 18+ Give Intellectual Observations of Sex

18+ has a blatant goal with their music: to explore the connection between mind and body. Yet, they are not trying to objectify the body or turn its exploration into commercial promiscuity. As visual artists, band members Justin Swinburne and Samia Mirza, aim for insightful analysis on the vital/virtual interaction for the human species, known as sex. From its savagery, to its sultriness, to its soulfulness, it is a layered experience and 18+ wish to uncover each one through weird sophistication.

All The Time

Listening to them is like hearing the audio of an experimental film. Their music sounds visual, which may seem like an odd statement. Yet, because they are also visual artists, they create music that can provide mental movie images for any listener. This ability makes them highly attractive to fellow artists or admirers of musicians that try to create innovative sound experiences. They sound like they belong in a MOMA exhibition, which makes them both exciting but also for a very particular listener.

Their next album, Collect, comes out on May 20, 2016 and is already showing a very likeable, more mature sound; check out their single Drama.  As usual, it is sonically different from anything else you can find on the radio and iTunes. Yet, 18+ really embody what it means to be an artist: a creative, unique expressionist of spiritual growth. They may sound like distorted fragments of various recordings, which include samplings of their personal calls, but they have a clear mission: to be their own individuals.
