Artist Close-Up: Charlotte OC Is The Raw Soul of Pop

Playing a show at The Standard, Charlotte OC was the equivalent to a lioness roaming a skyline. She feels féroce in delivery; raking and rasping notes to make they pitch perfect but emotionally gutting. Her range goes far and wide to show soulfulness is not so much about depth as it is rawness.

From “Better Off” to “Satellite,” Charlotte OC sings to the clash between dreams and truth. The minute you try to transfer a fantasy into reality, you are getting a “version” of your dream. For her, nothing is pure beyond how how you feel about it; whether it be a guy you are falling for or a resolution your are trying to find with your personal issues. Hence, again, soulfulness is not so much about the wideness of your wounds but the intensity of them. The way she controls her notes to make them appear spontaneous and combustible is incredible. Charlotte sings as if she has grabbed pain by the neck, and tussled with it time and time again, which attracts people.

Charlotte OC – Satellite

I don’t know if humanity’s penchant for depression or hurt is more natural than our positivism, but, for some reason, everyone loves a sad song. They love a songstress that can use her voice as the embodiment of their bad times, and then use their performance as an elevation for it. Charlotte OC becomes so enraptured by her own songs that you feel she is living them; moving her body as she is in her home fighting the memories of all the things that went wrong. Personally, to be able to sing is a talent, but to make others feel like your song is theirs, as well: that is a gift. People felt like they owned tracks like, “Boyfriend,” “Symphony,” or “Falling For You.” Even her cover of Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff” felt like an original.
