Artist Close-Up: Summer Walker Knows “Girls Need Love”
Is it rocket science? It seems now and then you will hear a man say, “Damn, women are confusing?” or “I just don’t know what they want?” Summer Walker says it in one song, “Girls Need Love.” Frankly, it is not hard to love someone genuinely, but it is hard to love someone disingenuously. Why? Because fake always gets caught, and in Summer Walker’s R&B track, she is over waiting for fake lovers not knowing to be true.
When I say “fake,” I mean the men that play us ladies to then question why we hate their game? True love is anything but a game, and Walker’s lyrics put that truth concisely. Her voice walks through the song as if she is kicking the rocks of disappointment and wondering “Where are the good men for this good woman?” Such a pensive thought deserves a scintillating beat and “Girls Need Love” delivers. It bounces with a baseline that carries Walkers lyrics like our inner thoughts; why can’t ladies say what they want, what they need, and what they deserve without feeling like such knowledge could be used against them? Some guys don’t want to hear what girls need, which is why Walker’s voice trickles with a casual sadness and self-assurance. It’s not easy realizing that you don’t need such guys, especially if you are waiting for a real man.
