Artist Preview: Phebe Starr Bring “Feel” Music To Your Ears

Phebe Starr is playing Mercury Lounge on September 19, and here is why you must see this artist whom has been compared to Lykki Li, Florench Welch, and Sia. Although Starr is shocked by these comparisons, I am not. What do they all have in common? Feelings. No matter how good the beat is, it is the catharsis they offer from their vocals that allows people to bring music from their feet into their souls. Thus, Phebe Starr need not be surprised by the comparison as her debut EP Zero is what I like to call “feel music”.

“Feel” music spans any genre but is a singular, spiritual experience. It is either a song or artist that looks straight at your soul, and for some reason, can describe your feelings and current situation better than you. How is it that a bassline and a vocal riff can tell me how sad or happy I am? Frankly, I do not know how to describe this phenomena, but I am open to experience it. Luckily, Phebe Starr makes you feel it with vocals like SIA, that pierce your heart with its sharpness. For her, music strictly targets emotions.

Track By Track Review:

Alone With You: the keys play throughout this track give it a stunning sense of “death”. Okay that sounds a bit off. Yet, the “funeral-esque” vibe is oddly befitting for lyrics that speak about letting your partner inside your heart and becoming absolutely open to him or her. Something about being  vulnerable with someone can make you feel like the old you and any mask you have could “die”, but the the kick-drum and Starr’s vocals show you that opening yourself to a potential love can also mean a re-brith. To be reborn in love; that is the message of this song! How Romantic!

The Worst Part: Who has not felt like an ex or a partner always know how to get the better of them? Whether it be in love or hate, this person knows your every button. Starr serves a darker toned song and voice to capture the rage and self-disappointment that comes when love pushes you to your worse.

Young Hearts: this song appears like a batch of cherry blossoms. Japanese -inspired guitar playing, kicking bass, and lyrics that promote the innocent love of young hearts make it vibrant ode to love’s  timelessness.

Jurassica: This track feels like you entered a dance-a-thon in the 80’s. LOVE It!

Starr wrote this song “to honor the importance of freedom in the midst of grief.” Lavender Scars is like a stunning, swinging crystal meant to put you in a deep trance of both love and clarity. Its beats are smooth as they enter your ears like the most picturesque waterfall. Add Starr’s vocals and you will feel as if you, too, have lavender scars cutting you with both despair and the bittersweet resilience they offer.

This song embodies empowerment. It rhythms capture the uplifting nature of love, and how it captivates everyone that can proudly proclaim they have felt this powerful virtue. In Addition, Starr has a fantastic voice that feels as if someone has handed you a dozen roses. They are perfumed with an ability to make you smile, which explains how she can make any song swoon with lovely sentiments or leap from rhythmic excitement.
