Concert Review: Didirri Observes Happiness At Rockwood

When Didirri asked his brother what is the meaning of life he said, “Who cares about that? Do what makes you happy, and make sure you do not get in the way of what makes others happy.” This has to be one of the most profound statements on how to live EVER! At least, it was to Didirri; whom took his brother’s advice and manifested it into, “Do what makes you happy, and share it with others.” At Rockwood, he shared and people cared.

From toweled letters to his ex to a happen-chance meeting with acclaimed booking agent, Tom  Windish, for Didirri, life is about the people you meet, and your spirit is measured according to how you impact them. Frankly, for me, a good person is someone whom has left more love than heartbreak in this world, and songs like, “Bird Sounds,” “Blind You,” and “’I Can’t Get Last Night Out Of My Head” seem to share the same mentality. On stage, Didirri is a sweetheart; open to tell the stories that make him think about life; even its a tale about a dog chasing its own shadow. For him, life is filled with metaphors that you form to help you find meaning in being happy.

Happiness is a choice, and, oddly enough, for however much we say we want to be happy, we search for and diminish the reasons we should be. With this mindset, my favorite part of his performance was when Didirri got on the piano and played Don Mclean’s “Vincent.” This track is like a hymn for the depressed, and Didirri sings it like a carol for tragedy. Vincent is a man that is deeply sensitive, and takes his life from feeling so isolated by a “desensitized” surroundings. Yes, that is a dark track, but Didirri’s voice is angelic enough to bring out the tragedy of alienation. Whether you are being isolated or isolating yourself, loneliness is often born when we give requirements to happiness; as if a spirit needs a reason to feel better.

Didirri provides a perfect show when you want to hear voice that sings to pain like mud on skin; he takes something that is dirty and turns it into a cleansing: moisturizing balm for the soul. Moreover, he chats with the crowd like he is filled with old pals, which furthers his easy ambiance. He is perfect for a night when you want to be, simultaneously, entertained and relaxed; when you want to laugh with friends, drink some wine, and hear music that says the meaning of your life is simply to make it meaningful for yourself.
