Concert Review: Soccer Mommy Are An Obsession At MHOW

Standing next to a woman holding her phone up and face-timing her friend to see the entire concert, I thought, “I would never do that. One song ….maybe?” (Word of Advice: Don’t Be My Friend.) Yet, this goes to show you how far Soccer Mommy has come. They went from not filling Baby’s to selling out MHOW, and they did it within a year. How you ask? If you get used to your weirdness than it becomes your charm.

The key to inclusivity is the acceptance of eccentricity. It is not only accepting that people are different, but also that they are quirky. I can truly say I haven’t seen people bring their pet skeletons to anything, but lead singer, Sophie Allison, does, which might be why some young woman on the balcony yelled, “That’s My Bitch!” For her, she represented “this girl;” the one that would never be “that girl”. Thus, as she sang songs like, “Cool,” “Henry,”  “Still Clean,” and even a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire,” Soccer Mommy lived up to their name of being the emotional crisis manager and cheerleader for the women and men who feel they are too “weird” to find love.

Normalcy is a spiritual chain, and from “Try” to “Out Worn,” Allison’s voice tugged it away. She steps her vocality as if she is climbing the stairs of self-love. This term has become popular in recent years, loving yourself because you are yourself is not always a good enough reason for people, especially if you think yourself weird. Thus, her voice felt clear and subtly poignant as she sung to that inner “weirdo” we all have that wants someone to see their strangeness as uniqueness. Someone whom appreciates  that you eat pizza with a fork and knife, you still watch cartoons every morning before you go to your “big girl,” Goldman Sachs job, and you are convinced there are aliens among us. Yes, “this girl” does not find love with just anyone, but, when she does, it sure lasts.

While their colorful rock n’ roll made people swish and head-bob in the air, as if breathing was the equivalent to bobbing for apples, I saw a couple happily “Elaine” dance and sneak in kisses in between. Though in a sold-out show, the room was empty for them, and they loved each other as if they had hired Soccer Mommy to soundtrack their romance for a night. It was in seeing this that I saw Soccer Mommy’s amassing success. Being an artist is not just about achieving more plays and listening ears, it is about being the music to some of the most memorable moments in someone/ a couple’s life.
