Concert Review: Elderbrook Brings The Beats To Baby’s All Right

Elderbrook brought the beats to Brooklyn. With rhythms that feel like leather satchels, filled with gold and silver, being freely tossed to a crowd, everyone could note the richer feel he gave to Baby’s All Right. Already a rightful star/ DJ in the UK, Elderbook, like Dusky, continues to make the natural, artistic recourse of “Coming to The U.S.A!”.  Yet, his rhythms perfectly match the flesh and sophistication of Brooklyn as a cultural domain known for soul and savviness.

There is a suave nature to Elderbrook’s beats tha,t when dropped within a crowd, musters immediate reactions of “Oh, yeah! I like that”. He goes beyond a regular “beat-drop” to formulate a soul-drop. It is as if one strike of his magical key leads to an alternate mood within his audience. Yet, I must elaborate that the Baby’s All Right crowd was READY! for Elderbrook. He certainly has garnered a fandom that were loyal to HIM!, and were not just “there” to check out a “new” artist. The room filled with spiritual salivation for a man that has wonderfully blended the adrenaline of the house/ electronica dance scene with soulful riffs/melodies that can go from “synth-baby vocals” to Ella Fitzgerald. In some ways, his music is like a delicious energy drink with a splash of Motown-lime. For however octane the fruit juices of his combustible arrangements make your mind, there is slight hint of smooth ease he laces through his own, edible vocals. The contrast is beautiful and hypnotic because you feel like you are flying high without a sense of potential crash.

While I love the house/trap scene, at times, the noisiness and beat build-ups for the inevitable beat-drops can feel like a crash in my mind  and a veil for artistic talent. After awhile, you have to wonder how much imagination and personal effort these DJ’s, especially he most successful ones, have put into their songs. These genres already garner a natural following and, in some ways, represent the music of this generation. Thus, I admire Elderbrook because he feels like an artist that embroiders his music. Each note, chord, instrumental, and synth is a bead, stone, gem, and ruby sewn into his tracks, especially his newest ones like First Time. This electro-wave track blossoms and booms with a busting bassline and the flowing coos of a digitized voice. With a kick-drum melody that makes listeners feels like an electric marching band has decided to hold a warm-up practice in their soul, the audience could not stop feeling “wild”. It in this sentiment that Elderbrook’s concert was a complete success.

When I am picking a DJ to splurge a ticket on, I am also picking a door to, for a few hours, go through and escape my daily routines/ worries. Buying a ticket is like signing a contract for a good time, in which, the artist has sworn to give it and you have sworn to receive it. Thus, Elderbrook’s ability to get lost in his own musical sentiment as he busts through his vocals and instrumentals with his eyes closed and spirit loose furthered the crowd’s wildness. While many artists and even “ticket-buyers” aim for music to make them feel good and happy. It is great to have a time where you feel wild and uninhibited, to which Elderbrook provides such a space.
