Concert Review: Erika Spring Is Sacred At Park Church

Churches ALWAYS fascinate me as concert venues. Every time I go to Park Church Co-Op, I can spiritually feel God saying, “Long time no see! I see you come for music but not YOUR SOUL!” (lol!) Yet, as Erika Spring took the stage, while a child ran around me with a princess crown, Heaven made a connection, in my mind, between the two.

There is a great, Fleetwood Mac line that says, “Time makes bolder children get older;” presenting courage as something that ages rather than grows.“Less” and “Scars” sung to this notion and the question that perplexes every adult, “When did we get so scared? When did we stop taking risks or grimly await loss before it came?” The best part about Erika’s singing to these spiritual questions was that she was in as church. The setting allowed her to stir up the quiet, confrontational nature of her sound.

Sonically, Erika Spring sets up her sound like an arcade game; synths transferring into rhythms like codes into actions. Yet, her lyrics challenge all those that try to play her. This idea feels perfect for a church because, at least once, you ask God, “Why?,” and that is what Erika is asking of herself and her lover. From “Close To Here ” to ““Divided Waters ,” she needs to know why the ones she most love latch pain to loving her back. This dynamic is amplified by Erika’s warm, caring presence that felt persistent and patient through some audio issues. It was as if nothing could tether her down, but her lyrics showed there are those that have. And though she sings quietly to their attempts, her thoughts are loud, poetical affronts.

At times, we think loudness is apart of challenging someone’s ills towards you. Yet, the truth is that, most of us, only fight those that have hurt us in our head. They become mental symbols for our life’s wrongs that we silently drudge up in our minds. At Park Church, Erika took your through the silence with a voice that proves a higher, vocal register can truly elevate emotions. For More Information On Erika Spring Click Here.
