Concert Review: Finn Andrews Sings Humanity’s Legend

Finn Andrews is a legend or, at least, a keeper of them to his fans. He is the Guillermo Del Toro of lyrics. Singing songs that feel written by and for creatures, which is what humanity, technically, is. We are a species; one that believes it is distinct because of its capacity for reason. Yet, Finn’s songs show “reason” may not be our strongest quality, but emotion is always a human one.

For Andrews, the human spirit is a myth; one of which you must face multiple monsters and demons to save. I am fascinated by his lyrics because they are creative, creepy, raw, and narrative. It is as if he aims to transfer Greek Tragedies into modern, folk songs, and the audience LOVED it. What I find fascinating about Rockwood is that it houses major international acts, in the small, red rooms that hold up to 50 people. To passing New Yorkers, Finn Andrews was another act performing in a venue that is an acclaimed home for rising artists. Yet, to his crowd, he was a beloved, New Zealand story-teller.

Finn Andrews – One By The Venom (official video)

Tall with a dominating hat, Finn Andrews plays to the troubadour tropes. He feels like the man strolling into a town to tell it a tale. Playing a lot fo new songs, such as “One By The Venom” and “Stairs To The Roof,” it was amazing how people followed his descriptive songs. It was as if he was both a music and literary leader, of which they audience went back and forth, with him, to recall an “old wives tale.” He was more than happy to oblige. He approaches the audience with genuine simplicity. For being so imaginative in mind, in person, he just laughs, cracks a few jokes, and drops his guitar pick in the piano so he can struggle, publicly, to pick it up (lol!).

Finn Andrews – One Piece At A Time [Official Audio]

Vocally, Andrews approaches notes like a simple; flicking vocals like tiny tides within voice box. Live, he tries to emote more his verses, compared to on record. With solely a piano or guitar melody following, in his loneliness, he appeared like an everyman. Singing the stories of persons you will never meet, but he has journeyed to find.
