Concert Review: First Aid Kit Empower Womanhood At Brooklyn Steel
I love First Aid Kit, especially because, like Nao, they have earned my labeling of them as “guarantee artists;” never failing to entertain. Their country-rock folk anthems are proof that music, itself, NEEDS to incorporate and elevate female artists. I say this because First Aid Kit blend good ol’ fashion music, with women’s empowerment, to turn their concert into a fierce ode to feminine strength.
As Klara and Johanna Söderberg spoke, you could feel the feminine energy rise, and it was beautiful, unafraid, and unabashed. We live in a world where many, even women, are unnerved by anyone who declares, “Female Power!”; finding such an idea ostracizing and degrading to men. Yet, as Klara discussed the madness of telling women how “not to get raped” rather than telling men not to do it, I saw that the first to clap were guys. I realize, in seeing First Aid Kit, that, whenever we see strong women, we have the tendency to think of/ call them “witches”. The duo totally play with that analogy in scenery of their set. Between images of wooded areas, whirling wolves, and their smirking faces fading in red smoke, you think you are watching two gypsies cast their spell. They both both sing and shake their heads and guitars with such a fervor, you would think their own music was putting them in a trance. Their music magic is invigorating, and the sisters share a similar capacity of either fluttering or tasing their vocals so as to soar like a dove made from electricity.
“Rebel Heart,” “Ugly,” “King of The World,” and “You Are The Problem Here” are just a few examples of the songs First Aid Kit played to show empowerment is freeing. For some, claiming self-love seems cheap or arrogant, but First Aid Kid remind all that loving yourself is the key to a more loving world.
