Concert Review: Flora Cash Are In Love At Irving Plaza

Something about romance makes you want to watch. Seeing two people love each other, and, somehow, transfer their love into a visible energy is hypnotizing. Yet, Flora Cash do more by transforming their love into music. At Irving Plaza, they were two people that found each other in spirit and sound. 

The first time I saw Flora Cash, they were behind their instruments, but, this time, they allowed themselves to be open and vulnerable: just two people singing side by side. They sang to each other and the crowd; even flirting and kissing before our eyes. It was like watching an in-person rendition of every Netflix film about pop stars falling in love with each other. Yet, the audience ate it up, especially the “kind heckler,” in the front, that could not stop yelling how beautiful Flora Cash were as a couple. It was nice of her to say but got weird after 30 repeats. Still, they handled it all with grace and giggles. 

As with lovelytheband, Flora Cash have grown, in time, as performers. They display more the meaning of their music by embodying a couple facing the odds of life through the evenness of their love. Similar to Cults, Flora Cash’s Shpresa Lleshaj and Cole Randall thrive by having soft, palatial voices. In having vocals  that feel born from an opulent, candy factory, they magnify the jadedness that spumes through songs, “18 Dollars,” “I Wasted You”, “They Own This Town,” and “You’re Somebody Else.” It is a strange delight to hear a pop fantasy about romantic disappointment or societal pressure, but we love pop music because it matches pain with synth-waved grandiosity, of which Flora Cash deliver.
