Concert Review: The Last Dinosaurs Roam Mercury Lounge

Honestly, no genre ever really dies, but pop feels like it never goes down. Often, I wonder why we all love this genre, especially pop bands. Somehow, the unity of a bunch “everyday” guys singing to lovelorn romances makes us feel “seen” and hypnotized. At Mercury Lounge, Last Dinosaurs proved that the “magic” of pop-rock is that it is how good people vent bad situations.

There are certain people that feel harmless, and Lachlan Caskey, Sean Caskey, and Michael Sloane. They approach the crowd and each other like we all, by chance, were invited to the same house party. Each member has been blessed with the “Aren’t you from my high school?” vibe, which gives them a natural, youthful familiarity. They feel like people you know, and, by the end of the night, the crowd felt like they had met them. Tracks such as, “Everything Relative,” “Forget About,” and “Evie” sung to every regular, good guy that either got their heart broken or walked away from a “meh” relationship, of which Sean’s sparks with vivacity.

Sometimes, I wonder what is worse; boredom, drama, or the drama you create out of boredom. It seems these three scenarios are what plagues Last Dinosaurs’ sung love lives, and it brilliantly captured the odyssey of youthful dating. Until you find you “one,” dating can feel like you are trying to decide whether doing the butterfly stroke or a dead man’s float will help you survive the ensuing, emotional tsunami. “Italo Disco,” “Eleven,” “Dominos,” and “Bass God” hint to he times when life feels like a giant mess of nothing, and you do all that you can to feel something about that. Hence, Last Dinosaurs charm comes in their ability to deliver fragmented dreams with a succinct, raucous demeanor.

At Mercury Lounge, Last Dinosaurs solidified that they are the friends you party with when you need to feel better about feeling down. They were fun and focused playing synth-waved rock that felt grounded between fantasy and phantasy.Yet, THAT IS THE POINT OF POP-ROCK! It stirs within you a benevolent riot.
