Concert Review: Flosstradamus Gets Ready For 2018 At Brooklyn Steel
There are certain artists you go to see that you have to be ready for! While I consider myself a moody listener, picking playlists according to the sentiment of the day, there is a truth to knowing what you are getting. I say this because Flosstradamus is an artist that you have to get ready to get lit! His 2017 Bash at Brooklyn Steel felt like a sonic apocalypse; saying goodbye to the hits of the year with the heaviest baseline of 2017.
Middle fingers up and beers abound, the crowd for Flosstradamus spoke his piercingly poignant language: “F**K Everyone! And F**K 2017!”. Now, the more prudish might clutch their pearls at hearing the DJ encourage such a thought, but it was befitting for the NYC crowd of Millennials who have no idea whether 2018 will be worse or better. The point is they know that they are at their most powerful in life, while simultaneously feeling at their most voiceless. Looking around at the head-banging and head-bashing as warning symbols and weed leaves splashed behind Flosstradamus set, you could not help but smile at the release of all pent-up tension. In this world we tell youth more than we listen to them, and, like any human being, that feeling could leave a sour taste. It is like watching your boss order 20 million type-writers for his company, and getting shut down for saying, “You do know there are things such, laptops and internet ?”. Hence, the freshness of Flosstradamus is that he plays to the inner build-up of ignored brilliance/ creativity, and you can see it in his selection of played artists like, Run The Jewels, Post Malone (who he ADORES like a brother), and Kanye West. All rappers that create for those looking to have good time after having a bad one.
What I love most of Flosstradamus show is that HE IS AN EVENT! He is not concert that you go to when you are like, “I guess I’ll go out tonight!”. You have to mentally and emotionally prepare for all the synths and strobe lighting that will be tossed into your face as if you are going for an eye and ear exam. For GOD’S SAKE!, the man plays his set from a digitized pyramid (#royal!). He bounces through Trap remixes as if music were a cocktail of drugs pumping through his veins. The irony is for however much he plays to feeling trapped in set and music design, he appears so free, and so did his crowd. It made me wonder if for 2018, no matter what comes, to feel freer this year, you have to let out your brilliance and counter all those that try to dim it. For Flosstradamus, the look/ essence of “sophistication” requires you to feel cold and act like nothing ever bothered you. As he would say, “F**K THAT!”For More Information on Flosstradamus Click Here.
