Concert Review: Gus Dapperton IS Halloween At Bowery Ballroom

Gus Dapperton simply feeds the energy of every misfit kid who was seen as “bad” or “crazy” because he/she could not pass for “normal,” which does not exist. Hence, Halloween may be an event for us mere mortals, but, at Bowery Ballroom, Dapperton was HALLOWEEN in essence. He did not need a night to give him permission to be his most “fantasy self” because he lives his days beyond such needy approval. #fierce

Sonically, Dapperton’s music felt like a giant, spiritual metronome. You can see the meter ticking back and forth through tracks “Gum, Toe and Sole,” “I’m Just Snacking,” “I Have Lost My Pearls,” and “Prune, You Talk Funny.” Yeah, those are actual titles, and, more importantly, they had people moshing, mushing, and mashing in dance. Honestly, no record felt as “big” in sound compared to how bigly it was consumed by the crowd; although his “Twist & Shout” cover was cosmically good! Yet, Dapperton sets such an ambiance of equality that the audience became united in carefreeness. People were ignited by a sense that we were all in the coolest “Anti-Cool” convention, and Dapperton was our Jughead Jones- Serpent King!
Gus Dapperton – World Class Cinema

There is a quiet mania to Dapperton that makes him feel part bookish nerd/ part Joker’s wildcard. He is simultaneously aware and looped, all at once; alert to what the audience seeks in him as their “leader” of fun but aloofly electrified by circuiting rhythms and feelings that swerve through curving songs such as, “Moodna, Once with Grace” and “Amadelle, With Love.” He is, in essence, like all of us; a capsule of imagination. He motions his body and brief words towards the audience with a randomness that every dreamer can relate to, and his screen of sporadic images, which included horror films, added to his show’s visionary vibe. Still, in style and voice, he is actually steady and calm.

Though he may add an occasional rasp to heighten to certain lyrical emotions or throw himself on the floor like an offering to the audience, Dapperton is a chill persons. Thus, the fascination with Gus Dapperton, again, comes with how his fans are taking him in. They place him where they place themselves, on the outskirts of societal definitions, but what makes him different is that he can make music from such a place.
