Concert Review: Hobo Johnson Is The Dude At Playstation Theater
Yelling your misery into a mic, proclaiming Justin Bieber’s need for an edible arrangements with a “Sorry” card, and throwing water bottles into a crowd as you slip around the stage in your gray, old man socks may not seem like the concert for you. Yet, for Hobo Johnson & The Lovemakers fanatics, at Playstation Theater, it was so….. Hobo, and it tapped into a sincere desire for no pretensions. For the rising hoard of artists seeking to just be themselves on stage, even if they think they are a bum, now is your time.
Of course, when someone says, “I look like a bum!” or am “schlepping” all over the place, you can see that as a negative. Yet, I have felt the most “me” in a pair of sweats, with a massive cereal bowl, and a Marvel movie binge on deck. My point is that we call ourselves “hobos” when our tastes for fun are simple and self-images are unglamorous. For Hobo Johnson, his motivation is to shake away the notion that the simplest you is a lesser you. It is as if he want all us emerging adults to find the little things that makes us as happy as kids frolicking in a bubble machine.
Hobo Johnson – Typical Story (Official Video)
Between tracks,Hobo Johnson felt like a surprising, motivational speaker. He is the first person to laugh at a fart joke while also being the first person you call in an emotional crisis, which for him are not separate. He is like Seth Rogen doing Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday, of which you laugh and feel shocked by all the nuggets of wisdom you are getting. Yet, humor is enlightening and Hobo Johnson enlightens, which is why whether he was screaming or sining verses into the mic of self-loathing and solitude, he still felt light.
Hobo Johnson & The Lovemakers – Happiness (Live from Derek’s Backyard)
Hobo Johnson represents a truth that I often forget; feeling sad can be casual. The hard part about feeling alone and alienated is that you can feel that way when you are partying with friends or even celebrating your birthday with loved ones at a dinner. We carry our fears, but Hobo Johnson is making music in hopes that we start carrying some faith in our selves, as well. For More Information On Hobo Johnson & The Lovemakers Click Here.
