Concert Review: Hockey Dad Smash Their Songs Like Pucks At Bowery
Hockey Dad: the titular image of a man WAY too invested in his son’s sports game, and turning beet-red as he treats his every move on the rink like life-altering. When you think of hockey dads, you think of passion at the cusp of rage and an untamed desire for glory. Ironically, hockey dads have a lot in common with Millennial youth, or, at least, they do with the Aussie duo of the same name.
Similar to Dream Wife, Hockey Dad have arisen to revive surf—punk mentalities for the youth of today. As they played their Bowery Ballroom show, they inspired the crowd to have more recollections than Jeff Sessions in actually remembering what it feels like to be young and own your mistakes. Frankly, the most beneficial asset to Hockey Dad’s style is that they look like two guys in their garage jamming out their inner angst. They managed to transform the legendary Bowery Ballroom into a homely setting; as if we had gone over our buddies house to drink beers in his basement while his parents were gone. Their fresh, mischievous aura made Zach Stephenson and Billy Fleming feel like the faces of casual anarchy; just two best friends busting their instrumentals, instead of their brains, from all the humdrum and silliness that is our current world. Their songs ooze the surfing rage of boredom that waves within every heart to question, “So, this is life, huh?”. Honestly, who has not, at least once, had a conversation of awe, worry, and eventual “over it” when it comes to dealing with the “bs” of being human.
Tracks like, “Homely Feeling”, “So Tired”, “Jump The Gun”, and “A Night Out With” played into the crowd as a friendly memorandum to every moment when you looked great but you felt like a snooze, which makes Stephenson’s voice the spark to your inner flame and Fleming’s drums the constant fuel. People jumped and sang along like a pack of kids playing “Ring Around The Rosie” as Hockey Dad coursed through their quick set. Yet, the duo proved they are going the rise and rise in the punk scene. They have smashed together grunge/ fringed essences of Nirvana and The Clash, and added every Millennial/ youthful gripe you can think of! For More Information Hockey Dad Click Here.
