Concert Review: In The Valley Below Reach The Highest Peak At Mercury Lounge
In The Valley Below feels like Virginia Wolf met John Lennon and decided to run a bed & breakfast at Wuthering Heights. In feeling like a blast through classic literature and rock, In The Valley give a concert experience that rushes over you on jittered intelligence and dark imagination. After all, the legendary names I have mentioned, from Woolf to Lennon, were known for their darker edges and lovely creative minds.

On one hand, you have Angela Gail whose presence etches out a seedy sensuality. She claws her hands through songs and moves throughout the stage as if she is reenacting a Shakespearean tale. She carries herself with a graceful drama that explains my literary references. She belongs in a gothic novel where the lead protagonists shows women can be fierce in love. Her hypnotic swag matches with her eloquent voice. It may sound strange that I say her voice is eloquent because I am no referring to her speech as much as sound. Yet, in holding herself like a regal heroine ready to fight or fall for her kingdom, the stage, she emboldens the stillness of Jeffrey Jacob. Dressed in all white, 70’s inspired suit, Jacob completely embodied the free love and keep peace movement of the era. He never moved from his central spot, which made him the “centered” figure of In The Valley Below compared to Gail’s sporadic one. Moreover, his voice has a sweet, softer tome compared to Gail’s simmering and scolding one. It is as if, together, they prove why we all love sweet and sour; they tastefully distinguish the other. The contrast enthralled amongst lighting that blotted and blasted like technicolor war was going on behind them. Such effects, only helped to bring out their ROCK N” ROLL.

Indie rock meets dream pop is how this duo defines itself, and they are not wrong. Yet, the “dream pop” aspect of their music is really derived by their presence and swag. On stage, they seem like a mystical hallucination thrashing and throttling keys, chords, and the most charismatic hooks you could ever hear. Tracks like, “Bloodhands (Oh My Fever)”, “Hymnal”, “Lover”, and “Last Soul” were so enlivening I thought music had become 3D, and was enveloping my visual senses as much as my sonic ones. In The Valley Below know how to give a concert that makes their music as memorable as your favorite Victorian novel or historical show; you watch their world to see how you can glam up your own.
