Concert Review: Juanes Takes Us To Outer Space At MSG

Starting with steam blowing forward and a video of Juanes as an astronaut looking at a picture of his beloved, the mood was set at MSG: we were about to be cosmically romanced. Juanes is one the TOP International artists in the world, and his newest record, Mis Planes Son Amarte, was to Latin Music what Beyoncé’s Lemonade was to the english market. He gave us a visual album, and now he is giving us a visual concert.

Scoping through his greatest hits’ catalogue, the night felt like a celebration of Latin Music itself. When Juanes played “La Paga” and “A Dios Le Pido” it had the same effect it did in 2002, people shot up and started dancing in the rows some “merenguito” moves. It was a powerful effect that Juanes knew he had. He wryly smiled and kept telling us he loved New York in both English and Spanish, and prayed for harmony between Spanish nations/ ethnicities. For being a “Spanish” concert, the crowd was mixed between those of us ready to represent with our national flags abound, and others who understood Latin Music is more than simply cultural or linguistic: it is a sonic phenomena.

If there was one effect of spreading his classic songs, like “Mala Gente” and “Me Enamora,” with his album Mis Planes Son Amarte, it was that it proved how easily confident Juanes has become as an artist. Some artists’ creativity ages gracefully, while others’ struggle to keep that fire “alive” because they believed it was tied to their “youth”. Yet, Juanes understands talent does not age; it simply grows with what you learn about love. While his earlier works felts splashy, bombastic, and brazened in attempts to make people/ “the girl” love him and love the dance-floor, his newest work like, “Ángel”, “El Ratico”, and “Perro Viejo” felt mature and more explorative. As images of him flashed with a “brujo” recalling his love for this “woman” through time and space, Juanes own affirming demeanor and warm personality made the night feel like a declaration that love always comes but you have to work to make it stay.

Juanes has to be one of the FUNNEST concerts you will ever attend, but also one to admire how a music genius develops himself. In the same way Beyoncé is not the same artist she was 10 to 20 years ago, the same can be said for Juanes. The Mis Planes Son Amarte tour feels like a visual chapter-book, with each song you witness how settled Juanes has become with his stardom. Moreover, you get some of the BEST covers you will ever hear of Joe Arroyo’s “Otra Noche” and Juan Gabriel’s “Querida”. For More Information On Juanes Click Here.
