Concert Review: Kailee Morgue Is No Doubt at Baby’s All Right
Singing one of No Doubt’s classics, “Sunday Morning”, Kailee Morgue was definitely giving me Gwen Stefani’s legendary “Don’t Speak” vibe. She embodied the icon’s pop blend of self-doubt and ferocity. If there is one thing No Doubt embraced in their sound was the irony of “kicking ass” while feeling like you barely had the legs to stand up for yourself.
The one thing I most noticed about Kailee’s performance is that she does not make eye contact, which become integral to her meek/ “Discovery” lyrics. Tracks like, “Unfortunate Soul”, “Intuition”, and “F**K U”, stood out as songs that encapsulated Morgue’s singular style/ appeal to crowd; she attracts those that understand what it is to not think the “best” of yourself, but refuse to settle for the worst others give you. Thus, as she looked up or above the audience, you got the feeling that she was reliving every time she had to face the “Medusa” in her relationship and cut her partner’s role in her life.
Yes, that is a rather deep analysis of Morgue’s message, but she has a simple enough soundscape to understand her insightful pop. Nearly every track had a baseline that felt summoned from the depths of the earth, and became the core of her hypnotic songs. Yet, because she has such a coy, friendly personality she has the capacity to make an electro infused tracks like, “Ghost of Mine”, feel acoustic. It is as if she make the most synthetic or elaborate things feel bare and vulnerable like, her voice. For being so willowy and svelte in vocality, she fills every song with the tragedy of loving not so great people.

We have all dated someone where we sincerely believe we must have been in a coma throughout that relationship. It just seems like there is no way we stayed with someone who thought and treated us “so less”. Yet, Kailee Morgue’s concert is one to go with your friends, inadvertently vent your sentiments on bad exes, and sway to the cool sounds of future pop.
