Concert Review: Kimbra Unleashes Her Primal Heart At Rough Trade

Kimbra unleashed Primal Heart on Rough Trade to a crowd of adoring and surprised fans. There is a sweetness to Kimbra that almost appeared wholesome, but, in her new album, she transforms her natural friendliness into ferocity. It is an impacting and electrifying change considering Primal Heart is all about love.

As a music reviewer, I cannot stop talking about love. It is, literally, what everyone is singing to or about. Primal Heart is no exception on that front, but it is exceptional in giving you bop after bop. That crowd was moving and shaking more than an amusement park; everyone felt like main attraction. Kimbra had altered herself in sound and style to bring about a wildness that is not about “going crazy” as much as embracing the crazy you are already. She was doing swag choreography and mixing her set like the long lost DJ/sister of Josie And The Pussycats. This vivacious dynamic created a freeing ambiance that  felt like LOVE was in the air.

“Human”, “Past Love”, “Top of The World”, and “Like They Do On The TV” had everyone dancing with an unexpected impressiveness. We knew Kimbra was talented, fun, and had a voice that could “bebop and “skid” like a jazz songstress riffing through a Charleston. Yet, knowing and SEEING her capacities are totally different things, and Primal Heart truly displays the range of Kimbra’s voice and personality. She is a bubbly woman that sees her fans like friends, and presents her songs like the love philosophies you would amongst your best girlfriends. The difference is she can scale and rave her wisdom to higher, vocal chords, and a soundscape that colors your mind enough to listen up.

With images of golden hearts bleeding coal and black and white- lined women carrying the shiny heart, Kimbra’s Rough Trade show felt like an injection of happiness to my night. Feel Good was pumping through everyone as if her rhythms were sonic IV bags of sugar and much needed romantic advice. Yes, we all want love, but no feeling comes without action, and Kimbra’s music is an act of love in and of itself. Four years in the making was worth it with how good Primal Heart beats.
