Concert Review: Maybird Show Why They Are Emerging Quickly In NYC’s Music Scene

Time is a funny thing, especially, when you are rising as an artist. While your life could be touring lounges and concert halls, the bigger the arenas and the closer you are to headliner, the more you know your “power”/ following has grown. Yet, how long it takes to rise or where it all leads is up for grabs. I make this point because Maybird headlined the Bryant Park Emerging Music Festival in NYC, and closed the night in what seemed to be their official statement: “Hey world, you are going to WANT to listen to us!”.

It was nearly two months ago when Maybird played the small charm that is Union Pool, of which the crowd at  Bryant Park’s Emerging Music Festival felt like a stadium. Hundreds picnicked before the giant stage and open air to enjoy the best of NYC”s emerging talent. I have been to Emerging Brooklyn Festival before, and what I most enjoy about it is how jittery the rising NYC artists are at performing in front of droves of NYC’ers. New York is not notorious for its warmth, yet I have to say we are always are loving towards artists. As each one stepped onto the stage feeling like they are “closer” to making “it”, Maybird approached the stage like they HAD made it. There was a casual confidence to their performance of their most recent album, Unraveling, that made their music feel like a giant handshake. If Emerging Brooklyn was about first impressions then Maybird was the “cool guy” at the party that your friend introduces you to the first time, and you end up talking to them all night. From fave movies to shared thoughts on politics and literature, that “cool guy”/ Maybird impresses you with his ability to be smart and thoughtful without force. While being gracious and rivetingly intellectual can feel like an outside/ extra step for many, Maybird’s Josh Netsky has mastered the art of being “unfazed”. This capacity was something I noted in my review of Unraveling as an album, and time has only made Netsky more lax and collected in his voice/ emotional purpose. For him, notes are like small darts he targets and tosses in hopes of hitting the center of your heart, which he need to do considering his music’s lyrics. In a world, where “unraveling” fees like a universal theme, songs such as “Keep In Line” and “Grace” felt like the anchors of a soul trying not to detach. With how calm/ calming Netsky’s vocals can be, Unraveling, in concert, became a record to pick up your inner pieces and heal.

Bryant Park Emerging Music Festival was a prime opportunity for Maybird to show that they are worth being seen and they did. Under the night-sky, the proved that their concert is one to see after a long day. They are like a musical “cool-down’; after you give all your efforts to your boss/goals, you see their show as a serene reward. For More Information On Maybird Click Here.
