Concert Review: Moenia Cantan Al Amor En Playstation Theater
Walking into Moenia’s Playstation Theater show, it was hard not to feel like you walked into an 80’s dance party in La Ciudad De Mexico. These synth-pop icons hailed from Mexico to the charts during the 80’s, but their excellence has continued to define electro-pop through the eras. Now more than ever, with synth-waves surging and swimming into every genre, their retro feel felt highly relevant.
In NYC, I flock to artists of “Latino Excellence” because, in the US, our community needs spaces of love, and there is nothing like music to give it. Yet, Moenia’s style truly has never aged. With electro fusions blended into Latin Rock, Pop, and R&B, their classic songs like “Dejame Entrar”, “Terminales”, and “Ni Tu Ni Nadie” felt like they were just released to radio.
Thanks to giant, neon ovals circling in splashing colors, songs like were absorbed like UV rays. You simply soaked in, not just rhythms, but the romance of songs that can turn grown adults into little kids in love. From “Clasico” to “Hielo”, their lyrics are like the electric flowers you offer to your “amor” just before you whisk her away for dance on the clouds. Yet, those clouds would never form without Alfonso Pichardo.
Moenia – Todo Mal
“GAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” That is what you feel when Pichardo rolls up his sleeves and hands you notes and moves as if he not only owns the stage; he owns your life. This aura comes from what I mentioned previously; he is the first to enjoy Moenia’s music. That beat drops and so does he, and you cannot help but feel his giddiness at seeing a crowd take in his vocality like a “Manto Estelar” or high, light beam that can transport you to better days. His voice blends “club kid” sensibilities with romance to give you voguing notes of love. Thus, transforming Moenia’s concert into one of the most relevant, retro acts you can see for a good “bailada”. For More Information On Moenia Click Here.
