Concert Review: Nick Murphy GIVES ME LIFE At Brooklyn Steel

There is a difference between Chet Faker and Nick Murphy. They are dueling, artistic identities of the same person, and Nick Murphy ROCKED New York to reveal a universal truth: some nights cannot be replicated. No matter how hard you try to connect and re-enact a moment, it is too mystical in power, and Nick Murphy’s performance was so mind-blowing even kicked chair from passion and music euphoria.

If music is a drug, Nick Murphy WAS SUPER HIGH! He moved across the stage, with some Elvis moves, and constantly switched instruments as if he was a shark: one still moment and the  life of the moment was gone. With a back-splash showing him, in real time, singing and playing instruments to psychedelic, visual effects, I was enthralled. Murphy had created a concert ambiance that felt like the calmest version of a rave. Yet, once again, people were high off life and the struggle to convey the dreams we have for a relationship to the reality we share with our partner.

This may sound strange, but Nick Murphy made me feel like I was driving in one of those sleek, Matthew McConaughey Audi commercials. There Matt was, with his Rolex and Armani suit, speeding down an unnaturally beautiful and clear road to nowhere and discussing how life is not “material.” Meanwhile, I was not listening and, looking out the window, day-dreaming. Yet, my weird, imagined story leads to a point: in this world, there are those that talk about life and the ones that dream about it. Moreover, if they end up in a relationship together, the hardest part for them is to make like more than than something you mouth off or create mind-fields about.

While the audience eagerly lifted their clapping hands, as if to do so won them a trophy, I realized that Nick had tapped into the core “miscommunication” of relationships. At times, we are living two lives with our partner: the one we think we have with them versus the one we actually do. Blessed with a voice that pebbles and rocks emotions as if they were destined to break glass houses, Nick helmed the surreality of relationship realities. Each of his songs unpacked the turmoil and tension of wanting your lover to see how you love them in your mind while they only wanted you to see how you loved them in person. As his arrangements enriched and packed the depth of his genius, Nick Murphy gave a show that impressed everyone. He is truly a genius. For More Information On Nick Murphy Click Here.
