Concert Review: Nothing But Thieves Are The Rock N’ Roll Catharsis In NYC
Nothing But Thieves’ Conor is literally the voice of pain. When you think of the best vocalists of our time, you probably think of an amazing set of women whose vocal pipes can scale a skyscraper in range. Yet, there are male vocalists’ whose range pierces souls with power and vulnerability. Conor is certainly one of them.
Nothing But Thieves – Sorry (Official Video)
“Wake Up Call”, “Graveyard Whistle”, and a cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin” were amongst the many tracks that played to Nothing But Thieves core message: “I just want to be okay!”. As Conor acknowledged the NYC attacks and asked audience to yell out a raging cheer in release of anger and realization that our presence remains, I saw why Nothing But Thieves’ fans LOVE THEM! They are for those that do not want their anger, but need to learn how to live through it. As Conor wales, whimpers, and welts his vocals through songs such as “Soda” and “Itch”, I looked at their crowd, ranging from men in suits to guys and gals in flannels and beanies, with each sharing a common thread: unwanted frustration. Guys swung their hands in the air with their “after-work freedom“ like, Nothing But Thieves’ was giving them the keys and breathes needed to unlock the chains of stress and exhaustion. People felt like they could be people, which is why one guy behind me COULD NOT stop yelling “F-YEAH!” for every song. I laughed at the genuine glee behind this phrase. It was as if Nothing But Thieves had arrived to tell this guy, “Dude, I’m pissed off, too, but I have to let it go!”. From souring relationships to the degrade of confidence we get in our daily routines, Nothing But Thieves deliver a show for those in need of catharsis.

I cannot reiterate enough how liberated you feel at hearing Conor sing. Sometimes, we believe beauty is just “pretty things”, but it can also come in the form of honesty. As Nothing But Thieves waned their guitars like moons in their hands, they reached virtuous levels of truth on how bad it feels to feel bad, but how good it feels to say you do.
