Concert Review: Ruth B Turns LPR Into An Empowering Safe Haven

I always say that time makes an artist grow because art connects to a person’s soul. As the spirit grows, so does its expression. At Le Poisson Rouge, Ruth B showed that time has made her grow from a girl with talent to a woman with a voice.

The first time I saw Ruth B was at LPR, and she had just released er debut album, Safe Haven. She was sweet, meek, and treaded through her performance like a child entering a river to learn to swim. Even then, she was excellent, but there was a bewilderment to her that I did not notice, until, I saw how confident she had become. While her songs and stories were always about feeling more “at home” in the fantasies of your head rather than the realities before it, last time, her deliverance felt more like watching a self-discovery happen on stage. Now, she found herself or, at least, gained enough foundation to build a performance pedestal.
Ruth B. – Superficial Love

I was deeply impressed by the upped connective and positive energy that Ruth B emanated from the stage. This time around her band felt like a “mini-orchestra” to her almost operatic aesthetic. Ruth B has a smoldering voice that makes even her high notes feel grounded like, a cloud being tied to earth. Yet, her regality on stage reminded me of opera singers when they are having their grand ballad; they stand center stage to a beautiful, lush backdrop. From “In My Dreams” to “Safe Haven”, her music was a forested background where she observed the trees of her spiritual growth.
Ruth B. – Lost Boy (Official Video)

I am sure I am not the only who felt like Ruth B gave a part concert/ part Ted Talk on self-empowerment. While Ruth B always radiated a soulful, “seeker” vibe, she has grown up, and now sees self-love is not sought as much as manifested. Such a message swam through the crystalline streams of songs such as, “Lost Boy”, “If This Is Love”, and “Mixed Signals”. Yet, it is her person that people pay to see. She approaches the audience as openly as her music; eager to convey the wisdom she has and desires from the world. No matter what age of the diverse crowd, everyone felt like Ruth B was their timeless friend; sending them letters in the form of songs that said, “I remember you because you are worth remembering”.
