Concert Review: Stars Leaves Me Seeing Sky At Rough Trade NYC
When it comes to rising fascism, Stars has a pretty solid, counter plan: make a band. The only way to crush the blandness of hate is through the love of creativity. In perspective, destruction is rather boring. It simply ends things, while creativity is endless. That notion pervaded Stars’ minds and their crowd’s hearts as they sang to their newest album, There Is No Love In Fluorescent Light.
Stars – Your Ex-Lover Is Dead
Torquil Campbell and Amy Milan sang to the rebelliousness of love. From how it combats those that choose to crush to how it enlivens us enough with simply feeling a “crush”. For them, love is POWER, and Cranley, in particular, revels in it. There are people who go beyond musicianship into to showmanship. This guys eats up the stage like pizza, and the crowd’s cheers are his special toppings. Every joke he made, lyric he sang, and dance he moved was 100% to get their applause and laud. It was so blatant that it was wonderful. In perspective, what is so wrong, as an entertainer/ person, to say that you enjoy the crowd’s praise. Stars energy and joy was infectious, and made their concert feel like a live show for happiness, which is both ironic and befitting. Their songs are 100% focused on love as a constantly fluxing force within your life. One love leaves so that another may enters as seen in tracks like, “Flourescent Light”, “We Called It Love”, “Wanderers”, and, of course, “Your Ex-Lover Is Dead”. This song is a classic for Stars, and created one of the most moving moments I have had in a concert.
Torquil and Amy’s full, fluffed vocals led to harmonies and sing-alongs that felt like life was cushiony enough to rest upon rather than its usual, “hitting” nature. Their songs may be about relationships’ loss and gain, but they make life, as an entire experience, feel like a win. Thus, when everyone sang “Your Ex-Lover Is Dead’s” prime lyric, “Live Through This, And You Won’t Look Back”, I got teary-eyed. The message was gorgeously wise; in life, if you got through the bad then you can leave with the good. From bad break-ups to broken dreams, go through the pain of having lost love because, only them, can love be re-gained. For More Information On Stars Click Here.
