Concert Review: Strand of Oaks Welcomes You To Eraserland
There is more to life than a love song, and Strand of Oaks’ Music Hall of Williamsburg crowd was ready to embrace this truth. Yes, you can boil anything down to an argument of love and the lack of it. Yet, Strand of Oaks’ charm comes in his ability to make songs that are simply about a man trying to figure out how he is “human.”
The grandiosity of Strand of Oaks is that he is not “grand” at all or assures his show has no “airs” about it. He incorporates his crowd by encouraging their sing-alongs, because, for him, each of his fans have been earned through his versed vulnerability. When you put your heart into your music, earning a packed crowd is like having a room full of people say, “I get you!” Thus, “Weird Ways,” “Wild And Willing,” “JM,” and “Ruby” felt like the opuses of a man wise enough to catch anyone city-slickin!
Strand of Oaks – Weird WaysYes, I said “city-slickers.” Perhaps it was the giant, cowboy-esque hat that hovered over his eyes or the burly, big beard that draped over his face and chest like a grown veil, but I kept on thinking of “city-slickers;” the concept that nobody can come into your town/life and tell you how to live your life with their “sophistication.” For many of us, our pains feel like a normalized abyss you simply learn how to carry without defining or glamorizing, which is EXACTLY why people LOVE STRAND OF OAKS! He is no preacher nor teacher; just a man sharing what he thinks he has learned in life, but is not quite sure (lol!). Hence, he sounds perfectly human over a good, guitar hook.
Strand of Oaks – RubyIt will never fail that the best way to approach people is as yourself. Genuineness speaks to genuineness, and when you add good humor and positivity to that mix then you gain attraction. People not only become connected to you but also admiring. Blessed with a voice that makes you feel angel wings are made with soil, Strand of Oaks knows how to make a life’s journey feel destined for a higher place.
