Concert Review: Talib Kweli Takes Summerstage Like A Legend

Let’s be honest. When you go to a Talib Kweli concert, you are not going to write love letters to Trump, send roses to Sarah Huckabee, or give heart emojis to Ann Coulter via text. Performing for the Summerstage series, on the same day as nationwide protests against our nation’s immigration, concentration camps, Talib Kweli was the perfect act for the night.

People were/are REVVED up about our nation’s apparent decline into 1938 Germany. In a world where reporters “intelligently” discuss whether the word c**t should be used over expressing outrage that children are being put in cages, Talib’s concert felt like one of the few places where people could say Trump’s a racist and his actions are 100% evil: no discussion. When you are a person of color,  ignoring or diminishing that your community is being put in CELLS is not an option or, at least, one Talib Kweli is taking. Thus, I mention America’s current, tense times because it felt both present at the show and transformed Kweli’s importance.
Talib Kweli – Get By

Some of the best rappers you will ever hear will not be on the radio, and Kweli is a good example of that. “Get By” is one of his biggest commercial hits, but this rapper has been inspiring so many musicians, I feel, he deserves more accolades. Yet, the crowd at Summerstage approached Kweli’s performance like pilgrims leaving offerings at a Hip Hop Mecca. With a live band, he flowed between his newest tracks and classics as if his verses were figure skaters. Yes, I know that is a “humorous” association, but think about it. Every lyric felt skated upon ice; dancing and shaping rhythms over words that razored through cold realities.
