Concert Review: The Regrettes Leave NO REGRETS At Mercury Lounge

Imagine being sixteen years old and confident? Yeah, those two things do not seem to be associated with each other. When we look back at our teen years, no one imagines themselves on the cover of Vogue or the lead singer to  aWarner Bros. signed punk rock group. Yet, most of us only imagine being Lydia Night of The Regrettes. At her epic Mercury Lounge performance, The Regrettes lead songstress comes off with the zest and zaniness we all wish we owned of ourselves. If Lydia Night is this wonderfully dynamic/ accomplished  at age 16 then I have to:

A) re-think my life choices

B) wonder if she could be the first female /youngest president ever in 2020

Hey Now

The Regrettes have to be one of the best pure-punk groups rising in the NYC/ industry scene. For a genre that has been  infiltrated and meshed with so many other genres/styles like, surf, wave, neo, shoe-gaze, psychedelic, it is refreshing to see a group go straight for its essence. As they entered the Mercury Lounge set, I, literally, felt the heat go up in the room. They shook their heads and instruments as if they we on some invisible Six Flags rollercoaster. Now, of course, you can say The Regrettes supersonic levels of energy and personality comes form their youth, but I would find that a basic excuse. Their dynamism is purely spiritual, and you can tell by how they carry themselves and speak to the audience. They do not hold themselves like most youth: with an invincibility complex”. Instead, they know that in life people will come for them and try to conquer their spirits, to which each of their songs is an affront saying “Let’ em try!”.  Songs like, “Seashore” and “I Don’t Like Youare each lyrical and sonic challenges to any sort of social label or personal typecast anybody has or will place upon them. It is in this that their age does surprise me because if the 16 year old version of me had any guts to call out a bully, even if he was a president, I feel like a lot of hard chapters, in my life, would have never been written. Thus, each person at that concert was enamored by the good music and good attitude this group of “music misfits” have.

A Living Human Girl

The Regrettes are a MUST-SEE of a show. First, if you hate Trump then you will love Lydia Night and her music dedications to him (lol). Second, you will also love Night’s capacity to screech, rasp, and scratch her voice like her chords were just a pair of cool jeans she decided to tear. How she prows throughs songs, even her cover of “Ballroom Blitz”, is something to relish. Moreover, The Regrettes, as a band, are PHENOMENAL. Genessa Gariano on guitar, Sage Nicole on bass, and drummer Maxx Morando dominate their instruments with a force and ferocity that, again, will make you contemplate your life decisions. I use to think I played drums until Morando went off the rails with rhythm and resonance that tore the roof off. Moreover, Sage and GG each have their own drawing auras that only further each band-member is meant to be watched by each of you readers. For More Information On The Regrettes Click Here.
