Concert Review: Twin Shadow Is A Music Misfit At MHOW

Wearing a jacket that said, “Misfits”, felt just right for Twin Shadow’s vibe, especially because the night was dedicated to his newest album: Caer. As he mentioned, “caer” means to fall in Spanish, and nobody falls more than a “misfit”. Yet, misfit is not simply a word associated to delinquency. Misfits are the rebels, poets, dreamers, and overall geniuses that do mind taking different courses to achieve greater heights like, Twin Shadow.

Real name George Lewis Jr.,  Twin Shadow has this raw energy that is meekness, mischievousness, and pure motivation wrapped in one. With a crowd filled with personal friends he shouted out and die-hard fans, the atmosphere felt grooved by love, and it’s ability to keep rising after every fall. Yet, standing center, Twin Shadow appeared like a human pillar; firmly placed to make you move according to his higher thoughts. There is no denying that he has a kinetic connection  not just with music, itself, but his own creations. He loves his songs and how they derived from his greatest treasure: his creativity. While it may appear obvious that artists love their own work, though love may inspire their music, it is never easy to feel like you have given your best.

Looking at the audience jump as if their legs were made of pogo-sticks, you could tell Twin Shadow felt pride. He has a voice that feels like Lenny Kravitz and Phil Collins decided to turn their vocals into an elixir, and he drank it. His vocality swirled like caramel into cake batter through songs, “Saturdays”, “18”, “Sympathy”, and “Brace”. He felt sugar being spread throughout rhythms that jolted in their sweet rushes. With neon lights splashing behind him and a disco ball spinning above, you kind of felt like you were in an 80/90’s prom. The night felt so young, colorful, lush, and glam; all words and moods that describe these fabulous era. Yet, Twin Shadow’s retro vibe does not take away how modern he is.
