Concert Review: Underground Mantra Gives Positive Vibes At Mercury Lounge
I begin my review on a personal note. There is TOO MUCH TALENT IN THIS WORLD! In a time, where the world seems to be losing its spark, you get bands like Underground Mantra, where suddenly light shows it still has a presence in the world. Blending positive vibes with indie rock is harder than it seems. Both are two entities that can jump into sap as easily as they can honey. People may want to feel joy, but they are quick to cut it off. Yet, there IS NO CUTTING OFF Underground Mantra because to do that would be foolish.
The first thing you love about Underground Mantra is that they appear warm and oddly innocent. Sure, they are a batch of brash guys with wicked smiles and wickeder instrumentals, but they also have an aura of childlike sweetness that makes you instantly protective. It is like watching your little brothers go up on stage, and pour their hearts out like succulent beers on draft. After all, Mercury Lounge IS a bar, amongst Millennials lounging around in pre-weekend jitters, Underground Mantra matched their excitement with a level of enlightenment. It was as if their songs like, “Show Me Some Type of Way”, “Uncomfortable”. or “Bliss” were two giants voices saying “You are okay!”. Now do not underestimate the enlivening of this statement and vibe. Sometimes, feeling okay can be like swimming against a tsunami, and trying to convince yourself that a butterfly stroke will prevent potential drowning. There are moments when you are at such a genuine loss, but Carmine Mattia has the voice to turn such a loss around. His voice is like bourbon dripping off steak; he smoke the flesh of their simple verse to hit with the firs of their grooved, psychotropic chords. The trio completely approach the term “Mantra” for its mindfulness effect, but keep the “underground” vibe in looking like a group of Brooklynites ready to hang and have a good time.
When Mattia and Tyler Schwatrzman unite in harmonies under a veil of lyrics that discuss the trek for optimism, you swear you heart flutters and says, “So you have been there, too!”.Trying to be optimistic is not easy, but Underground Mantra get you there. With melodies that fall like leaves on wind, you just feel gently taken by them. They make you bounce in their lightness, and offer a night out that is just good. We all need a time to sit down, hear jams, and laugh over a beer, to which Underground Mantra make you revel in the glory of this simple pastime.
