Concert Review: Wet Sings Electrically Sad Love Songs At MHOW
Hearing a bunch of grown men with beards sing “I don’t want to be your girl anymore” has to be one of the greatest concert experiences I have ever had. It was so sincere and oddly genderless because Wet’s fusions R&B and electro-soul leave anyone bare to the hurt of love’s rejection. Thus, I have to thank Wet for their show at Music Hall of Williamsburg.
Serving up heartbreak veiled in pop, their MHOW show was a night of unguarded self-pity and electric R&B stylings. Yes, I said “unguarded self-pity” because when someone breaks your heart, you feel bad for yourself. Thus, Kelly Zutrau appeared on the stage like a young lady who has waltzed from the end of a relationships onto the stage. She sings her songs as if they are the break-up tracks you put on on a rainy day, with some comfy clothes and chocolate, as you relive how a promising romance became a broken promise. Her capacity to draw an entire room of people into the pain of her voice and the solemnity of her presence is lovely, especially because she was so nervous.
Wet – Lately
Midway through the concert, Kelly gasped, “I am so nervous!” I could not tell as she scoped through tracks, “Lately”, “11 Hours”, “There’s A Reason”, and “Softens”. Yet, the moment stood out because she said it is as if somebody had unloosened her from an anxiety corset that was tying her stomach. The quote bursted from her as well other instances when she seemed surprised that people showed up to see and cheer for Wet. Yet, I was not shocked because Kelly has a voice that is piercingly clear in its rawness. It feels magically tragic like watching an angel become human. Suddenly, instead of wings soaring she has flesh that can be lyrically bruised by guys that do not know loving someone means nothing if you do not love them well.
Wet – Deadwater
Seeing Wet, now I know their “secret weapon”; they are creating the Millennial and Generation Z “break-up” songs. From “It’s All In Vain” to “Still Run” every track was sung along, with fervor, by friends and lovers who remembered, even in their current joy, what it was to have your heart sadly broken.
