Concert Review: Weyes Blood Makes Me Happy For Her At MHOW

Watching Weyes Blood, I had a sentimental moment. A few years back, I saw her: unsigned and opening for the opener at MHOW. The crowd was small, and, as with a lot of openers, people have the tendency to treat you like you are the background music to their “much needed”, loud  work conversations. She was alone and singing her songs with a beauty and sadness that made you think the Titanic was sinking just across the street. Well, at Music Hall of Williamsburg, her sold-out, headline show had the Titanic Rising.

I, genuinely, wish every talented artist could have a magnificent, monetarily prosperous career that kept them emotionally fulfilled. Thus, seeing Weyes Blood’s rise is moving. Her record, Titanic Rising, has been named one of the best this year and the PACKED audience’s reaction explained why. It was as if Weyes had revealed, through her music, an unspoken truth: society lies.

WEYES BLOOD — EVERYDAY (in 4k)

From films to norms, every generation is taught untruths about how human connection, especially love, is acquired and thrived. Yet, Weyes Blood sings to that moment when you realize you have learned a whole bunch of romantic BS, and, now, need to reprogram yourself when it comes to relationships. Thus, tracks like, “A Lot’s Gonna Change,” “Picture Me Better,” “Do You Need My Love,” and “Movies.” As she laughed with the crowd, “It’s time to take you to other spaces,” I realized this album makes going through constructs feel like warping through cosmos. From the ebbing and flowing of lights to little lamps that flickered like flames. Weyes set up her stage/ presence to feel like neon-waves of fire; blazing in color and nature.

Confident, happy, and touched, Weyes Blood gave a stellar performance. The first time I saw her she was quieter, but now she is backed by production, a full band, and a fuller audience. People are paying to see her headline because her ethereal voice heightens their raw feelings. It is a beautiful result for a woman that, again, has worked hard.
