Weyes Blood Makes Music To Make You Emotionally Naked

It is quite befitting that in her dimly lit set, a candelabra was brightly lit. Weyes Blood is like a candelabra of music. She is symbolically a batch of brightly lit candles enlightening the darkness of life. Her voice writhes in pain and sundering vulnerability, while her presence is quiet and warm. Thus, you feel comfortable in allowing her to leave you emotionally naked.

Weyes’ music is like spiritual nudity. There you are in front of the mirror, after a cleansing shower, looking at your soul and analyzing every mark and nuance of it. You analyze your spirit like you analyze your body: looking at what is wrong while trying to feel what is right. Weyes Blood sing and write song aiming for that desire. We all can be harsh on ourselves, which she sings, but we also want to love ourselves, which her music makes you do. Every emotional barrier that you can have is torn down without knowing if the result is more pain or an entrance of joy. It is absolutely euphoric to be and feel so open, and Weyes makes every audience member feel that heartfelt liberation. You go to her music and her concerts because you want all the spiritual masks and clothing to be gone. You want to be emotionally and spiritually naked.

In The Beginning

It is an enriching experience to hear words that describe how haunting life can be, especially in trying to figure out how to live it like its Heaven. I can almost cry at describing the beauty of Weyes’ voice trying to attain such celestial wants. If emotions could be tasted than her voice would hold the most glorious flavor. It is a voice that makes you think you can actually see life as if it were an entity revealing itself before you but bowing before her. The lyrics of her songs are mesmerizing in their ability to capture the smallest details of sentiment. Truly, it is like seeing fireflies in a jar: her words sparkle in these three minute odes to life.

Some Winters
Frankly, music should not be so beautiful because it can make you happily crumble. Her innate talent  leaves me in awe. She embodies the mass moments of sadness and loneliness that we all undergo and her vocals elevate them to light. She is both a mirror and healer of pain.  Like 1970’s songstress Nico, Weyes Blood’s voice is a deep, smokey haze of wonder. Sure, she does not dance or move much, but she does not need to. Her songs move greater than any choreography because they are based in the chaotic and simple rhythms of life. Moreover, her presence reminds you of the shy, sweet girl that everyone underestimated but now see she is beyond their limited understanding.
In between kind quips and jokes, Weyes Blood reminded me of the many shy girls whose voices often get diminished by others whom do not realize their potency or power. You can tell she is naturally coy, but, when she sings,  her loveliness is undeniable. For her, music is a soulful connection to this thing we call life. More importantly, it is a necessary connection to other human beings whom are equally struggling to figure it all out. I loved her performance and her music will be avidly played on my iPod, especially for those rainy days when you need a good sad song to make you feel hope again.
Eyes Blood played in Music Hall of Williamsburg on June 11. For more Information on her Click Here.
