Concert Review: The Man Who …… At Rough Trade
The Man Who? What a great, strange name for a band because it launches a millions stories. The Man Who went to the moon. The Man Who fell in love. The Man Who discovered the telephone. For The Man Who, at Rough Trade, their songs were about finding your story when you feel the ink in your spiritual pen has dried.
Yes, I use parable language in my reviews, and I also make unique comparisons/ assessments (lol!) like, this one: for some reason, I kept on thinking of bravado as I heard them play. The Man Who really do sing for guys that are losing the “bravo” of their bravado. They live in Fleetwood Mac’s Landslide lyric “But time makes you bolder/ Even children get older/ And I’m getting older too” The sheer realization that, perhaps, your youthful “bounce-back” is getting tired and consequences are catching up. Hence, the inner courage you thought was a given was, actually, the sweet naivety of a life not yet so hard.
The Man Who – Natural Villain (Official Audio)
Similar to Banners, The Man Who felt intimately anthemic. Busting drums and guitar melodies for the inner ruptures of any guy missing their old tenacity. As a feminist, I like when I see literature, films, or bands, like The Man Who, that portray men as emotional and drive their songs through that fact. Human beings are emotional, and it is in the vastness of our feelings that we become both distinctive and instinctive, which are two qualities you feel when you hear John Baldwin Gourley’s voice. There is a natural, guttural sensibility to his voice; as if his vocal box is, literally, in his guts.
The Man Who – Down (Official Audio)
When I say “guttural,” I really mean spiritual raw. Gourley is so casually soulful, which aligns beautifully with how big The Man Who’s music sounds. It is not easy to feel like things are not easy anymore. Suddenly, dreams don’t come true, relationships don’t last, and desire become fleeting passions. Hence, The Man Who really live up to their name; creating music for The Man Who…….
