Diandra Interviews Reyno: Keeping Your Authenticity Through Prosperity
Let us be frank! Right now, Latinos are coming under fire in the U.S, thanks to hateful policies and rhetoric. Thus, what better way than music to reveal the humanity we have always had as a community. After receiving massive success in Mexico, Reyno are ready to bring their rock anthems to the U.S, and continue their journey to discover the art/sounds that are most authentic to their spirits. After interviewing Pablo Cantu….. I have no doubt in their crossover’s prosperity.
Diandra: You said awhile back that your music was entering a new era. How would you define this era and how it has revived you as artists?
Pablo: The first two albums, we were still finding out our own identity. In the beginning, we were a trio doing the best we could with what we had. Then, we made this accomplished album, and now, with our label, we are thinking of more long-term like with the tour in the U.S.
It feels like everything is consolidating together for the band. It is like finding out that things are not for “play” anymore. The band has a place in the Mexican territory and an important fanbase.
Diandra: Do you feel rising fame and praise has given you confidence in finding your identity?
Pablo: Yeah, but, of course, there were doubts in every single decision. Yet, we tried to stay true to the music and what we liked. There were “agree to disagree” moments between Christian Jean (lead vocalist) and I, but we both trusted the artwork, our honesty, and gained a well-organized team to make things happen. We truly believe that any music is made possible by being true to and believing in yourself.

Diandra: Going along with this idea, what do believe your newest music will say about who you are or how you believe in yourself?
Pablo: The thing is that it is constantly changing. When you are making music, sometimes you think you are believing in something, and what happens is something different. You start writing a song, and your realize your subconscious is talking to you in a very weird way and making things happen so that you constantly find out who you are who you want to be.
We are starting to learn to enjoy the process. We felt overwhelmed with our first album because it is so important as an introduction for an upcoming band. At the moment, we enjoy the crowds and the opportunity to make a living out of what we enjoy doing the most.
Diandra: So, in some ways, you can say your music evolution has been learning to enjoy making music?
Pablo: Yeah, actually! It goes back to when you begin. You were not expecting to write a hit song or get noticed.Yet, I can confidently say we are on the right track, and we have the confidence to be natural.
(Cue me, literally, YAYING! at this statement lol!)
Diandra: In Reyno being a duo, how do you feel you balance each other in the creative process?
Pablo: I think we have to trust each other when it comes to one of us having to take the lead. It is a matter of taking responsibility and seeing who has more conviction about something. When one of us has a clear vision, the other has to support it; even if he might have another idea. We both have to remember that this is for the long-term. We are going to be doing this for years, which means who leads will constantly change, and we have to practice supporting each other.
(YAS!!!!!!!!!!!)

Diandra: How do you feel your U.S. tour will compare to your other tours in terms of style and messages towards the crowd?
Pablo: Honestly, we are finding out as we go. We did Ruido Fest a couple a days ago and, honestly, it is a very different crowd and feeling going away from home and finding people expecting you. We had very good crowd and merchandise sales, and we were no expecting that because we did not have too many promo efforts in the area. So we were very happy and more driven to see that our fanbase was slowly growing here as it did in Mexico. It takes time and persistence, but we have a good chance to plant a seed on these grounds.
Diandra: You are planting seeds on these grounds, at a time when Latinos are suffering from their darkest moments in this nation. How do you feel your music can bring a sense of relief and positivity?
Pablo: Absolutely. The way to change reality is to set a well-made example. In this case, we apart of an exchange of cultures. We are Mexicans playing rock n’ roll which was made in the states. We are giving a more spiritual, Mexican base to a constant exchange of ideas. It is not that we are not political, but we believe that by doing our jobs we are already doing something about it. Talking to American bands, and leaving an example that it is alright to have a free world and free borders.
Diandra: Going along those lines, your music is often considered “alternative.” How would you connect that term with how you push your sound and redefine how people consume your art?
Pablo: Alternative, in Mexico, is often defined as everything that is not mainstream or pop. Fortunately, it is getting harder and harder to define music today. That mixture and fusions of global sounds is making things better and more complex. From my point of view, we are willing to be almost anything. We are not pop-haters, we love classical music, and believe in all kinds of expressions as long as they are taken with responsibility.
Diandra: What has been a moment that inspired you in seeing how you inspire fans?
Pablo: Honestly, this visit to Chicago, and this expansion in our minds in realizing the size of this world and how much there is to explore. You are just crossing a border and there are people who relate to you and all you have gone through to make things happen for yourself. That is groundbreaking to us, and coming to the states has been unforgettable for us.
Reyno – Me Desprendo (En Vivo Desde Codependiente)
It should be said that Pablo Cantu was one of my favorite interviews. His wisdom, humility, and overall friendliness made Reyno’s initiative to redefine how we consume music as art feel authentic. Many artists wants to be stars, and change the world because they feel glory in being called “the change” rather than seeing how they are it. Yet, Reyno truly can alter the Latin Rock scene, and become an international marker of how vast/ virtuous our culture is! For More Information On Reyno Click Here.
