Diandra Interviews VALE: Confessing Love Through Songs

When I first heard VALE’s “One Day,” I swear my ears spoke to me and said, “OoooOOOOOoo, I like this!” After a mild heart attack from realizing my ears could speak to me, I concurred my ears were right (lol!). VALE’s music achieves a rare feat, for many artists, in being so instantly good, your heart quickly moves into her song’s narrative. In our interview, she discusses having a healing purpose; aiming to create songs that push people to confess their love for others without any fear.

Diandra: What is your favorite childhood memory with music and family?

VALE: One of the ones I remember the most is me rapping “Super Bass” at a family barbeque. I was probably around 6 or 7 years old, I have no idea how and why I knew the words to super bass but it is what it is.

Diandra: What is one piece of wisdom your family has given you that you wish to transfer through you music?

VALE: The other day my mom told me to always let someone know how I feel about them. She said that if I love someone, I should waste no time and tell them, because we don’t know how long we’ll be here. I want my music and my overall influence to show everyone to always choose love, and take risks. Love You Mom!

Diandra If your music was a movie, which would it be and why? Which character would you be in that film and why?

Vale: I feel like it would be a confusing movie with an ending that just makes sense after you watch the movie over and over again. So maybe Fight Club? I had to watch that movie like three times to fully understand everything; it’s a lot. I’d be Edward Norton’s character because I am the narrator, but i’m also confused as to who I am in life, but i’ll figure it out eventually.

Diandra: Your music promotes ideas of authenticity. What do you feel makes you genuine and what makes you tell someone else is genuine?

VALE: I feel that while everyone is unique, we all have similar traits. However, what I think makes someone stand out, is what they do with these traits. You need to be able to feel comfortable with your own self, and that’s the most beautiful way you could ever be authentic.

What makes me feel genuine is being able to express myself through art, even if no one knows the true meaning behind a song, I know I’m being genuine and it’s the best feeling ever. I can tell if someone else is genuine by the way they act, because someone who’s genuine will always make it evident that they know and love who they are.VALE – one day [Official Lyric Video]

Diandra: Going off that idea and the song “heart,” who are the hearts or people that show you most what it happiness? How and why?

VALE: My parents have always shown me true happiness, and I feel very lucky that this is my situation. They have always taught me to put my interests and happiness as a priority for myself; while letting me know that being sad is also part of the process of becoming truly happy.

Diandra: Singing to love, what are the things you seek in partner versus what you stay away from?

VALE: I want to stay away from any relationships for a long while, but, when the time comes, I would look for someone that has my same sense of humor. Someone that supports my career and is always encouraging me to move forward. I don’t want to depend on someone, or someone to depend on me, I want a partner I can rely on but still be separate individuals. I want to stay away from people that act entitled and those who are rude towards others.

Diandra: Describe an experience you turned into a song. Which song was it?

Vale: All my songs have come from experiences I’ve lived. But there’s one that inspired an unreleased song of mine, which is probably the best story I can tell you about. This happened over a year ago, I was in LA doing some sessions, and I decided to post something that started a huge fight between my classmates and I. People started switching up, and it was just very funny to me; so I wrote a song that day that essentially talks about how you might know someone for a long time, and you might think there’s a sense of friendship and trust in that relationship, but in reality there isn’t and there never was. This is the song of mine I love the most by the way. I’m excited for you to hear it.

Diandra: You describe your music as R&B with influences from SZA and Rosalia. What about R&B and such artists do you find romantic and real?

VALE: I love how R&B music has such personality to it, and also has some of the most personal lyrics ever. There’s so much range to this genre that I just find it so interesting and beautiful.

Diandra: Your music is about seeking your self-worth, what are the things you most love about yourself?

VALE: I’m still working on this, but right now I can say I love my work ethic and perseverance. I love how much I have matured over the past two years and the person I’m becoming today!

Diandra: With the idea of personal growth, what are the qualities and truths you have found out about yourself through becoming an artist?

VALE: I have come to the realization that it is more than okay to be in touch with your feelings. Songwriting has helped me a lot in terms of being able to express how I feel in ways I love; it has helped me open up not only to the world but to myself as well.

Diandra: What are you favorite things: from tv shows to foods?

VALE: My favorite tv shows would probably be Scandal, American Horror Story, That 70’s Show, and Stranger Things. As for foods, I literally like everything, but my favorites would be any Italian or Spanish dish, and Japanese food, as well.
