Jen Reviews: Glassio Turn Mercury Lounge Into A San Junipero of Love
Glassio are such a colorful, electric band that they embody everything Diandra Reviews It All is about. There are musics that reflect life, and then there are musics that embody everything we could ever want to feel from life. Glassio took to the Mercury Lounge stage to dominate NYC’ers with everything we enjoy feeling: fun, funk, and my fave: VIOLINS PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND!
If there is one thing this site will ALWAYS appreciate is violins, and they added a vibrantly earthy dynamic to their electro-pop sound. It is might have been the first time I ever was happy to say, “Oh, go play yourself a violin!” Lol! Yet, the Mercury Lounge stage felt bigger holding Glassio’s mini-orchestra, and felt like it could match the bigness of lead vocalist Sam Rad. With influences like Paul McCartney, Erykah Badu, and Barry White, it was no surprise that Sam Rad felt like a vivacious mix of each as strings built threaded blankets of sound under him. It is clear that RAD WANTS to headline MSG. His hunger for stage lights brims through his bombastic nature, and eagerness to display his vocal capacity in exchange for a crowd’s smile. He sings his notes like they have to climb up a ladder to leap from him. That edged dramatic is why I love when an artist wants to entertain. Yes, every artist wants to sing, but Pinel desires to leave an imprint of fun upon viewers, which is an added measure/ dynamic that not everybody cares to think of that. His force as a stage presence is cooled and coiled by the ease of guitarist/ backing vocalist Charles Pinel. Although both share dewed, doable voices that bend in simplicity, they are also a ying and yang of admiration. Their presences and creativity fit so well that it explains why, for Glassio, its not just the music that needs be electrical in currents but also their vibes.
When you find a creative mind like yourself, it is fireworks or rather funkadelia as seen in their songs. From “Try Much Harder” or “Morning House” to “Papaya”, each song felt like it was made in the beaches of San Junipero. (Yes, I am referencing the Black Mirror episode!) Somewhere, two women are happily falling in love in a sci-fi beach made in a tech lab that harvests souls for a digitized after-life, and I like to think Glassio is their soundtrack (lol). Yet, in all seriousness, Glassio crosses their show between synth-waves and shore ones. This duo shows you how glamorous, and risqué love can actually be through sounds that feel too unreal to be.
