Album Review: Prince Charlez Shows Creativity Is An “Evolution”

Compton native and sought-after songwriter, Prince Charlez is releasing his debut EP Evolution. It may seem strange to call your, technical, “first step” as an artist an evolution, but every “first step” is paved by many others. Prince Charlez has been making hits for the queens of R&B like Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Mary J. Blige. Yet, now it his turn to show he is not only a king behind the scenes, but also in front of them.
Prince Charlez – Back Around

In six tracks, Prince Charlez proves his success has ridden on originality and an eclectic soundscape. Evolution sounds like a mystery platform into love. Each song is a room filled with puzzles, tools, and clues left for you to figure out why Prince Charlez is proudly proclaiming “I’ll Tear It Down” and he’ll be “back around”. The intrigue of his music is that it more dark R&B. He sings like his heart is being strained; as if his lover has snatched from his chest and is squeezing it for all its bloodied worth. He breathes, cuts, and cusps his notes like passion is flowing through his chords, which gives him an accurate portrayal of why certain relationships are not easy to let go even if they are “technically” gone. We presume when either your lover or yourself exit a coupling that it is a brisk, leap out the door, but it is actually comparable to a slow, creeping crawl, which is why his heavy, rolling baselines seem befitting. Love can enter on a plane, but leave like a snail on a stroll, especially if the love was a toxic, “chess match” for power of which you need an “Evolution”. Yet, Prince Charlez does have sweet hits on love like “make it work” or “Can I”, which simmers his experimental sound into a “poppier” soundscape, while radio hits like “Hot Boy” WILL BE heard at the club.
