Song Review: Find Yourself Through Marnie’s “Lost Maps”
Up-tempo, electro dream-pop is a concise definition for Ladytron’s frontwoman Helen Marnie, aka Marnie. Her new song “Lost Maps” proves why her band and her creativity have been pioneers for electronic. She reminds that a synth- key can open a dream door.
The song carries an ominous tone, and the video is equally dark and ambitious, which, technically, is what being lost is all about. Lostness is not a great feeling or something we all celebrate. Although the song was inspired by the refugee crisis, Marnie wanted to aim the video/music with a more universal scope of not knowing where you or a person is going and can come from. That confusion as to your origins and future as a human being is hurtful, which is why the protagonist of the video seems pained. Yet, Marnie will NEVER let a good beat go. “Lost Maps”, like electronica itself, has a artificial feel with Marnie’s voice sound like the gentle, human voice guiding your spirit as you go through the “machine”. From a refugee leaving his home or a young woman trying to figure out her career, lostness changes in degrees but is born from a soul’s tension at living in a system they feel unapt of.
