*2016* Album Pick: Jorja Smith Is My Heart In “Project 11”

Jorja Smith has been on my radar for awhile because she simply sounds SEXY! I cannot deny it even though I am rather tepid about defining female songstresses with said word. Sexy is too easily stamped on singers, yet Jorja Smith is not your “hooched” up sexy. She brings out the sophistication of love’s tumultuous passions with a voice that drawls and drips with seduction in “Project 11”.

Smith’s voice has a strange, straight-toned blend of elegance and smoothness. She sings her lyrics like pavement being cleared for you to walk upon her emotions. In “Something In The Way” she drudges up 1950’s pop with a thing of jazz to recall that something was not right about her now ex-relaitonship. She uses a lax annotation as if the lyrics are being pulled from her, which makes her subtly resonate with Amy Winehouse. They both had that “pulling” quality where notes were their pain, and like teeth they were twisted out of the, The vision might be seem grim, in contrast, because the album comes into your sonic/soul sphere like water. Thus, Jorja Smith might be the rare human being to make her pain easy-listening.

Songs like, “Carry Me Home (feat Thea Gajic & Maverick Sabre) ” will pierce you with its quiet brokenness, while “Imperfect Circle” will make you dance to repetitious nature of society’s mistakes. Both songs are sung by Jorja Smith as if her voice was whirling dervish; a beautiful, consistent, and spiritual spin on emotions with the purpose to clear them. Yet, you, the listener, are the only one whom knows that Smith is dying for some love and tenderness to clear her mindful space. Again, her voice is subtle in its fragility. which is why the poesy of her lyrics and ethereal arrangements sound so stunning. Jorja Smith sings like an artist that is not trying to dominate listeners or charts. She sings like a human being that has been dominated by persons with their own intentions. The difference makes the album seductive and sexy, as I mentioned. Still, again, the attraction is not even sexual as much as beautiful. You want to hear and stand with the artist that sings a song like, “So Lonely”, which manages to uplift and uprise every sentiment of isolation you have ever felt to make you confront it with hope.
Jorja Smith is my artist pick for 2016 with a superb promise of artistry in 2017. She is not only favored by me for her fantastic, swaying style, but Drake is a fan, as well. Thus, For More Information on my 2016 Pick Jorja Smith To Bu Project 11 Click Here.
