Album Review: Donna Missal Get Deeper In “Lighter”

From the beginning of Donna Missal Lighter, you feel you are watching a 1950’s classic, teen romance. In this retro drama, a young “good girl” falls for the “bad boy;” he brings her down to hell and she raises him up to heaven. The question is whether she wanted go to hell? Was he her downfall or excuse? With a voice that cherries notes, deepening, reddening, and sweetening them until you taste her feelings like fruit.
Donna Missal – Let You Let Me Down

Lighter is a maturer, more visionary Donna Missal. Missal’s voice is inherently classic: from sound to style. She reminds of the days when singers grabbed a whiskey and cig to stand before a crowd of people and lights to sing to heartbreak. Thus, her voice has an inherent drama we associate with past eras, but she is today. What makes her “now” is that we love vintage and vulnerability; don’t just glamorize how screwed up dating can be! GET INTO THE GRIT! From “hurt by you” to “let you let me down,” she is emotionally throwing wedding dresses into mud, and offering a listener THE ALBUM for when they want to embrace their heartbreak like one would a film.
Donna Missal – How Does It Feel (Lyric Video)

You ever picture yourself like the protagonist of a movie? Framing whatever situation you are going through like the scenes of a film? Welp, apparently Donna Missal and I do this (lol!) At least, that is how this album sounds. From “how does it feel” to “i’m not ready,” every song feels like a scene; with strings that feel twinkled, melodies that appear drawn, and overall instrumentals that are perfectly paced to assure you know Donna is THE LEAD. I know that may seem obvious, an artist that want to shine more than everything, but it is not always easy to create a soundscape that supports rather than overpowers you.

Did I enjoy Lighter? Yes! Yet, what I enjoyed most, overall, was not just its catchy tunes on how we love people who can’t give us a break without a break-up. I also love that it is Donna Missal coming, even moreso, into her own artistry and perspective. To Buy Lighter on July 10 Click Here.
