Album Review: Donna Missal Shows “This Time” Is Her Time

Donna Missal’s voice makes me clutch my pearls. She is sultry and elegant; giving a weight to her vocality that is near corporal. She shows the sexiness of flesh, and the capacity to, literally, touch love or rather hold love in your touch. Hence, her debut album, This Time, feels as rich as Soul, as rhythmic as Hip Hop, and a raucous as Rock N’ Roll.

Sonically, this album is incomparable. It is distinct in its balance of light and darkness as if Missal has put twilight into a literal, sonic loop. It is 100% genre bending; as the songstress desired. Instead, the focus is her voice, and its capacity to emote the whirlwinds of relationships while still sounding steady and unfazed. She drips coolness while singing to love that can leave you mad because he was a “Transformer,” or you were left pleading “Don’t Say Goodnight.” Her vocality is so frothed and gurgled in champagne notes she might as well bubble over tracks, but that feeling furthers her messages.
Donna Missal – Keep Lying

Donna Missal Wisdom Quote: “I’ve spent most of my life being hyper-focused on time, which I think is something that a lot of women obsess over. We’re in such a rush to make things happen, when really we should take the time to figure out what we actually want out of life. I think it’s so important to believe in yourself enough to let things develop in a way that feels right to you.”
Donna Missal – Driving

In This Time, you feel like you are “Driving” to “Jupiter” for “Thrills.” Notice, how I used her track titles, in order, to frame my sentence. In some ways, her album is framed according to the highs and lows of loving life, lovers, and yourself. At first, we fall in love with someone or a dream, and then we doubt that bond; challenging it by questioning whether its flaws are too much for his/her/ its strengths to shine. Lyrically, Missal becomes every person who has questioned whether he or she is struggling to be vulnerable to their love or whether it truly is a weak relationship. Hence, the title of her album, This Time, feels poignant because patience helps you see the difference. Luckily, Missal’s sophisticatedly distinguishable sound will make you sit, relax, and think.
